Cystitis is the medical term for inflammation of the bladder.

In recent years there has been an increasing number of studies advocating a significant role of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) disorder in the pathogenesis of chronic bladder diseases.3,4

The bladder is protected by a mucous layer known as the GAG layer and is thought to protect the underlying urothelium from irritants contained in urine.3

There is evidence that the GAG layer of the bladder is deficient in cystitis. This deficiency contributes to the clinical symptoms in the diseases such as interstitial cystitis, cystitis caused by infections, trauma, urolithiasis, urinary retention, neoplasia and radiation induced cystitis.5

50 % of the patients were free of bladder symptom after primary therapy of Cystistat® without any further therapy during the 5 year follow-up1.
